Dark & Deep
No matter the season, dark colors and rich textures create the perfect mood.

Claire Staszak of Centered by Design transformed this townhome in Chicago’s historic greystone district into a sophisticated blend of European charm and contemporary California style. The homeowners, who were originally from the Midwest but were moving back from New York, and who had fallen in love with California style, wanted to fuse these worlds to create their own style, in an eight-month timeline. Staszak, who is known for historic restorations, reimagined the spaces, merging her clients’ love of art and antiques with natural materials, clean lines, and deep colors. Fashion designer Harris Reed has designed his first homewares collection for Fromental, through Holland & Sherry. The collection includes some of the custom designs in Reed’s own home, as well as in his SS26 runway collection. His own bedroom walls are adorned with Wilde Dreams, named after Oscar Wilde. The design captures the spirit of bohemian decadence and aesthetic rebellion embodied by the leading light of the late 19th-century aesthetic movement. Championing “art for art’s sake,” Wilde and his contemporaries celebrated beauty, sensuality, and self-expression as essential to everyday life.

In this Lincoln Park home, Julie Mitchiner of JAM Interior Design, was tasked with deconstructing the open floor plan to create a separate entry space. Mitchiner added a partition wall painted in a Benjamin Moore black and an intensely colored floral wallcovering by Schumacher. The dark palette has the effect of making the space seem larger.
