The Art of the Kitchen
Form and function coexist in these beautifully appointed spaces.
For The Coveted Kitchen in this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York, St. Charles New York created this stunning homage to the 120-year-old neo-Georgian town house where the show house was held. The cooking suite was crafted for both state-of-the-art entertaining and effortless, intimate meals thanks to the cutting edge JennAir appliances throughout. Wrapped in timeless finishes, sunlight and gracious gravitas, the room conveys a sense of permanence. The kitchen is architecturally appropriate to both 1904 and 2024, its classic prewar-style panel cabinetry features St. Charles’s STC No. 2 with signature inset square hinges and hand-crafted brushed-brass hardware. A handsome herringbone floor is neutral and grounding, a complement to the distinctive Dekton counters, backsplash, and striking ribbed columns, through Cosentino.

In a NoMad loft designed by Michael Chen of MKCA, the kitchen is organized around a muscular 15-foot-long island containing distinct working and social zones. One side is utilitarian, facing a wall of hunter-green linoleum cabinets and containing an induction cooktop by Gaggenau. A massive 10-foot-long volume of heat-tempered steel incorporates new kitchen ventilation and task lighting. The cooktop is concealed on the other side of the island by a large, vertically oriented block of marbled Phoenix Onyx stone, next to which a stainless steel tabletop appears to extend from it horizontally, providing an additional surface or a space for casual dining and socializing. Double oven and refrigerators by Fisher & Paykel, wine refrigerator by Sub-Zero, dishwasher by Bosch.

Left: Le Chic Bohème is the newest in Silestone’s boldly veined patterns from Cosentino. The collection includes four new colors: Jardin Emerald, Rivière Rose, Blanc Élysèe, and Château Brown (shown here), which has a subtle marble look with an elegant, dark brown background and reflections of metallic-pink copper and bronze veining.
Right: For this cream-colored loft kitchen by John Starck of Showcase Kitchens, the designers created definition between the kitchen and the living space by incorporating blue subway tile in a vertical pattern and a custom mosaic, from Studium, that mimics vintage chinoiserie. Functionality is paramount with a full suite of Miele appliances, including an induction cooktop, refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, and ovens.
