Modern History

“A twenty-first-century, Landmarks Preservation Commission-approved rebuild of this Upper West Side townhouse’s rear facade is proof that even within a landmark district, a historical reference can drive a thoroughly modern design. Inspired by Georges-Eugène Haussmann’s guidelines for Paris, we reinterpreted the idea of light limestone facades and steeply pitched roofs, using Westbrick thin brick cast from 100% recycled glass in a limestone hue, and a gray Quartz-Zinc standing-seam roof. The design echoes the inset balconies of Parisian garrets, with glass guardrails linking the brick below to the zinc above: a subtle nod to Belle Époque Paris.”
