Drama Queens
Neutral doesn’t mean boring in these scene-stealing kitchens with showstopping details.

For a newly built waterfront home on Long Island’s North Shore, Bakes & Kropp designed this modern, transitional kitchen. Led by Senior Kitchen Designer Mary Dimichino, the design team drew inspiration from the peaceful water vista framed by the kitchen windows. The result is an open, airy space with clean lines and a soothing mixture of white and walnut finishes tempered by polished metal accents. The client sought to eliminate the need for wall cabinets within the 400-square-foot kitchen, opting instead for walnut-front drawers that wrap the perimeter of the space and ensure easy access to storage. Along an exposed brick wall, floating walnut wall shelves and a walnut range hood with polished metal accent bands echo the cabinetry. The kitchen boasts top-of- the-line appliances, including a Wolf range and Bosch dishwasher. Flanking a series of metal-framed glass pantry doors are Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer columns encased in walnut-paneled doors with icebox hinges. Photograph by Bakes & Kropp

Left: Rachel Schwartz of Rachel Schwartz Design created this kitchen with book-matched slabs of Calacatta Macchia Vecchia marble from Artistic Tile. Schwartz says, “When I saw the stone, I almost fainted. For me, it was about the bookmatch. The joy of what I do is about the individuality and the one-of-a-kind quality. And that is what I love about this stone. At eye level, it is one thing, and then when you look at the island, it is another.”
Right: Manhattan jewelry designer Stephanie Gottlieb collaborated with designer Tara Kantor to create this sophisticated black-and-white kitchen. Because the room had abundant natural light, Kantor knew that dark cabinets would be just the ticket and created this impressive focal wall of cabinets and integrated appliances. In the center, Fisher & Paykel’s Minimal Speed oven and wall oven blend with the modern aesthetic, and their induction downdraft cooktop sits on the island. For London House, a boutique residence building in the River Oaks neighborhood in Houston, Texas, Eggersmann collaborated with property owner Randall Davis to create kitchens that are fully customizable from the brand’s array of cabinetry and amenity choices. In this pale cream-colored example, the German-crafted cabinetry is accented by matching marble backsplash and an impressively sized farmhouse sink that lends a sculptural quality to the serene space.
