Sky High

The Centrale is making its mark on the Manhattan skyline.

Written by Stephanie Ames

At 71 stories and 800 feet tall, The Centrale on East 50th Street is one of the highest of the new breed of super-tall buildings to be added to the New York City skyline. Ceruzzi Properties worked with architects Pelli Clarke Pelli and interior design firm Champalimaud to create an experience swathed in comfort and luxury with amenities that create an ambiance similar to the finest five-star hotels. No surprise there, Champalimaud is known for its work on properties such as The Carlyle, The Hotel Bel Air, and The Beverly Hills Hotel.

“We approached the design of The Centrale with the idea of creating something that would serve as a luxurious respite amidst the hustle and bustle of the outside world,” said Alexandra Champalimaud, founder of Champalimaud. “The ethereal quality of the public spaces is achieved through the color palette—light, bright and an overall subdued elegance—as well as the bespoke large scale art, large hanging light fixtures and natural materials.”

Assuring the utmost in privacy and exclusivity, residents enter The Centrale through a dramatic porte-cochère that spans an entire block, from 50th Street to 49th Street. The impressive double-height merges sumptuous textures and tones, and filters light through floor-to-ceiling windows, forging a connection between the world outside and the sanctuary within.
